Teenager is the basketball coach of the 8 year old, but the 5 year old has never been left alone like that with anyone for that long. She told her dad she didn't want to do it.

The father does NOT know this teenager at all. I agree that there needs to be some questions answered and we are working on those too. Keep those answers coming because i would like to show him that we are right...that she's wrong for doing it.

It depends on the age of the teenager-is she old enough to drive and allowed to have anyone under the age of 16 in the car when she is driving? Does she have parents nearby who can provide backup or assistance if needed? It also depends on the teens maturity. Will she use this as a party pad for her friends while she is supposed to be watching the children? These are questions you or the childrens mother should be concerned about. I certainly wouldn't, unless I personally knew the teen and her parents very well.

If teenager means 18 or 19 then MAYBE if this is a responsible person she has used before and trusted. I would NEVER trust a 16 year old for anything more than a short time on a single day. I think this person needs to re-evaluate what's more important, a trip or their children's welfare and safety.

The mother is nuts. What kind of mother would leave children of those ages with a teenager while she goes to Cancun. She is only thinking of what is fun for her and not the well being of her children.

NO way theres to many bad things that could happen. It is the Mother and Fathers responsibility to find a Adult or relative to do so or take the kids with you or cancel your Trip.We go on Vacation Every year and take our Children. That part of being a parent is having to sacrifice some things.

I have a 10 year old and I wouldn't leave her alone for anything especially with a teenage babysitter for that long. Teenagers tend to have a strong influence over younger kids and get them to do things they shouldn't do.

I think that is very irresponsible. Goodness only knows what that teenager could do to the children. What a selfish mother. Hopefully someone will call social services on her and have those kids placed with someone a little less self centered.

do the kids and her know this teenager well? AND is the teenager a responsible person? if the answer to either of these questions is no, then it is crazy.
However, if the answer to both questions is yes, they know her well and she is responsible. then it is something I would do. age is rarely an accurate predictor of maturity. There are plenty of adults I wouldn't leave a fish with, much less a child.

no

The only possible way I would even THink about leaving young children for that long was if it were with an immediate family member such as a grandparent or aunt / uncle who was TOTALLY responsible. There isn't a chance that any teen is ready for that kind of responsibliity - no matter the age. It doesn't even matter how trained they are or if they even think they are ready. ONLY a resposible adult is ready for this sort of commitment. Even a teen who is a sibling is not ready for this and I would consider it totally unfair to him/her to even ask them to commit to something of this magnitude.
This woman needs to seriously reconsider her options. And ONLY if the trip is totally necessary.

My guess would be that if there isn't an adult present, it's illegal. Report that to your local HRS or social services. A teen isn't an appropriate full time sitter for kids for a weekend, much less a week.

Don't allow the kids or the teen to be put in this situation. Mom needs to put her children before her vacation.

That is crazy. The mother should cancel Cancun. She needs to get priorities straight. If the kids are holding her back maybe the father should have them.
