You need to set up an equation.
Firstly 3% represented as a fraction is 3/100 or .03.
.03 x a = 42.
Now divide both sides of the equation by .03 to isolate a.
.03a/.03 = 42/.03
a = 42/.03 Do the math: (42 divided by .03) and you will find
a =1400.

42/a = 3/100

4200 = 3a

a = 1400

42 equals 3% of whatever a is, therefore you need to figure out what a is.

Anytime you have a percentage question, you can set it up like this.

WAIT!!!!!!!! Don't listen to any of them above me!!!!!!!!!! They are all wrong!!!!!!!!! You need what A is not what 3% of 42 is.

Since 3% goes in 100% 33.3 times. And 3% of A is 42, you multiply A, (42) by 33.3. You should get 1398.6. That's what I got. So in short........

A = 1398.6

Simple. You are looking for a number that multiplied by 0.03 gives you 42. Then to find that number (A) you must divide 42 by 0.03:

(0.03) A = 42

Then, A = 42/(0.03)

42 divided by 0.03 = 1400

That is, the 3% of 1400 is 42.

Proof: 1400 x 0.03 = 42

Got it? Cool!!
