I think it is a great choice for a first DSLR. The lens that comes with it is pretty good, but I would try to budget for a Canon 430ex or 580ex flash. When buying lenses, remember that it is not a "full frame" camera. Just read the owners manual for a full explanation. Not a big deal, but one you need to know about.

Hope this isnt your first Digital Camera =). Well anyways I do own this camera so it will be a bit biased as like people who own a Nikon D80.
I do not feel like if this is your first dSLR you will be ready for wedding shots. Wedding shots do have a glow to them or most photographers try and add it as they take a picture. Even I still can not get the feel to be right with the XTi but then again you can add it in later on photoshop. If you have used Canon cameras before, then this is as easy as moving from a tricycle to a bicycle well at least for me. =) The interface of almost every Canon camera is almost the same. The SLR however does add a few more features to the menu. If you have time to mess around with it get the lens kit, it is very versitle but when you need a better lens for the wedding/everythign else you may need to invest money in different lens. Do not know how the layout of the wedding area/baptism/rececption area is. So I would suggest a zoom len that is Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 if you have the money I would say Canon 28-70mm f/2.8 L. The lower the f/ or ampature, the fast the lens is. Remember I only buy Canon lens and equipment jsut so the warrienty covers it, you can buy 3rd party stuff but I like to stay with Canon. Also L means Luxary which is the top of Canon line. Itll be expensive. here go to http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/index.html to research lens.

Flash unit.... I couldnt decide either so I just bought the best of the Canon flashes. Speedlite EX580 =). Go big or go home =) lol. Well dont follow me just lower ones work just as fine just a few features that the 580 does have though is it can trigger other flashes (dont have any other so I do not personally know how) and reaches father than other flashes. Get an external battery so that the recycle time is fast (this means the flash recharges faster so you can take more flash pictures in a row). Id say the XTi is not enough for your needs but it is a perfectly good camera all the same.

Sigh... you can use any Canon lens... it just crops it 1.8x I believe. And dont buy it from best buy... you get ripped off on the price. Go to beachcamera.com I buy everything there and its cheaper than bestbuy

Canon XTi it is a very good camera. Take the Canon LEns EF 17-85 mm IS USM = stabilizer + 5x zoom + very fast AF. XTi is very easy to use. ISO 1600 ...no noise !!

before you buy a camera I would go to a store and try out a few and see how you like them.
Don’t base it on what other people think, because if it was me… I wouldn’t get it but I don’t like it because of the grip the camera provides. Overall it is a decent camera and I don’t have any major complaints about it.

But I would go check it out at a store, bestbuy should have it or a compusa or any camera shop, but do some checking on the camera itself and see how you like it personally.
If you find it and want to find some other places that sell it. I know a few sites that sell it off the online and they might have some used ones and it isn’t ebay, it’s an official reliable company that gives you a tracking number 
