I misphrased my question. My pregnant dog went in for x rays today. The first xray he saw what he thinks are 3 skeletons, but the x ray was really light. in the second he found nothing. He said 45 days was too soon to take x rays. So he has me coming back next monday. She is 45 days today. My question is Was it too early to detect? Or could she be going through a false pregnancy? He doesnt think thats likely but you never know.He tried to feel for them but she was to tensed up. She has gained 10 pounds.

It can be day 45 from a mating, but if she actually concieved up to 5 days later...it would NOT be day 45 really. I usually wait until day 53 to x-ray.
Be sure youa re not being charged for x-rays that are too light due to technical error!!! I have seen vets do this!!!! The exposure was not right and they charged the client for it anyway.

I would redo the x-ray in a week. Just for the sake of knowing for sure. It is usuallu off on the exact number, but at least you can know for sure there are puppies.

Some say 45 days is ok to do but depending how many times you bred her it's kind of hard to determine when is her 45th day. I usually breed my dog 3 times (ex: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and then count 55 days from the first time then I'll take her in for x-rays. That way she's 55 days from first breeding and 52 days from the last breeding. This way the puppies skeletons are a little better to see in x-rays. Also the less time you have to bring her to the vet would be better for her so that way she doesn't have to be put through more stress than she needs to. It's already going to be a stressful time for her when she goes into labor.

You should x-ray no earlier than 45 days, but if you did see skeletons on one she is pregnant. It may be that they second x-ray was so dark that you could not make out the light skeletons. You can detect them on x-ray after day 40, but it just isn't good for the puppies. If you saw them on x-ray, than she is really pregnant, especially if she is gaining weight. My dog was x-rayed on day 45 of her gestation and it showed 3 puppies, but she ended up having 4.
