how long did you hold it and what happened? did you have to go get opened up and drained?

This is almost medically impossible. The bladder will simply "let go" when it gets too full. LONG before bursting. This is just a rumor school children started to justify all those social trips to the washroom!
Holding urine habitually can weaken the bladder and/or cause bladder infections in some people.
