Yes. We have done 3 overseas tours and the Government will pay for ONE car only. If you choose to bring two cars, you have to pay out-of-pocket for the second vehicle. This can run into the thousands of dollars. Most people I know (and us too) took one car and then purchased a cheap little car when we got to our duty station. Because of the one car is paid for rule, there are ALWAYS lots of cheap little cars at the lemon lot. We lived at Ramstein, Germany and RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall in the UK.
Oh, I forgot one thing. If you're vehicle(s) are financed you will have to go through you finance company to get permission to bring your vehicle overseas since most finance companies don't allow you to take a financed vehicle out of the country. Ususally you only have to furnish them with a copy of your orders. We took a car that was through Honda and have never had a problem. Have fun! Overseas tours are the best!!
It has nothing to do with rank at all. If you are stationed overseas and own a vehicle, you can bring it with you. From E-1 to E-9 and O-1 and beyond.
I totally forgot about rations. You will receive gas ration "coupons" (in the UK and Germany). Basically when you buy gas you give them the coupons for how many gallons/liters you got and then you pay for the gas. You can get extra rations for gas from your unit if you need to. Gas is extrememly expensve off-base so most people do not travel far from a military base. however, we drove from the UK to Paris and never had a problem. We just paid for our our gas (it was alot) and went on our way. There is not much difference in emissions controls in the UK and Germany as compared to here. They have unleaded gas and everything. it's not the stone-age :0)
We are Air Force but things should be exactly the same for you. Air Force and Army go hand in hand overseas.

Usually you can bring one. Be warned, in some places they still do not have unleaded gas. You can get it on base, but if you take a trip you are limited because you can't fill up off base.
In the Philippines we removed the catalytic converter so we could use regular leaded gas, but it's a big hassle with the EPA if you try to bring the car back.
You don't necessarily have to pay for shipping the second car. The navy has what is called "opportune lift." This is free shipping on a vessel that has extra room. The only drawback is it normally takes a looooooong time.

Yes. You can also bring a motorcycle.
"We ship to any country in the world where Americans are stationed, including to countries were we don't have much presence, like Israel, Ecuador and Russia," Helfrich noted. "But the main focus is on Europe -- Italy, Germany, Turkey, England and Spain."
Be careful though. Extended warranties are often not valid overseas, so you may be out of pocket for vehicle repairs. Also, if your vehicle is not common, you'll have trouble getting it fixed.
We were in Germany from 2003-2006 with a Saturn Vue. Getting any exhaust work done was next to impossible. Routine maintenance was not a problem.

I'm in the Army and I'm stationed in Germany. My orders said I can ship 1 car for free and I did. If you're married you can sometimes ship 2 cars but it depends on where you are stationed. Check his initial orders. It should be in there. GO ARMY!

Yes, generally this is the case. And you can purchase a car overseas and bring it back to the states.
In fact, some G.I.s purchase new cars in one country where the rate of exchange may be cheaper than in the country they may be going to, and by this can sell the car with a profit...

the military willpay to bring one POV over.. but of you are going to Japan, don't bother. It is EXTREMELY expensive to retrofit an American car to Japanese emissions standards, and even more so to convert it back. Just buy a beater when you get there. much more cost effective.
Also, if you currently have a loan on the car, you must get permission from the lender to take it OCONUS.

you are only allowed to ship one vehicle on his orders. depending on where you go, you will have no problem purchasing a second vehicle. we were stationed in germany for 6 years and there are alot of soldiers leaving the country and have to sell their vehicle to clear the installation. we purchased a second car for $1,000. some are much cheaper and some are more expensive. good luck.

The answer depends on which country you are going to, If you go to Korea I can say the answer is NO, if you go to Germany, you can only take one. The main thing you need to look at is the standards that they have in some countries as I know japan is stricter on things that we are not. GOOD LUCK.
