How do you teach your dog to walk using a leash?

Slowly. If your puppy has never had a leash on before, start with a collar or harness. That can be a pretty scary first step for the puppy. Then supervise him dragging the leash behind him for a while. Finally, start following him and holding the leash up. Eventually you can start tugging on the leash to help him figure out what you want.

Let your dog get used to some thing hanging off of it first. Does it have a collar on now? If so that is step one,if not get a collar and let it get used to it then get a light weight leash and when you go out let the puppy drag the leash. When it gets used to something hanging off of him (day or 2). Pick the leash up and let him walk you. give this about a week then start training.3 months is a good time to start training there are many different ways to leash train how big is your dog gonna be will you be walking in a busy place this all depends on how you want him trained. Look in to local obedience classes.

A large breed dog can start earlier than small breeds. At first u will find urself picking pup up alot. Do it every day they get used to the leash.

Choke collar, long rope... be tuff and persistant. Use a long rope, if the pup just sits there you will keep walking till you reach the end of the rope. The pup is jerked and you still continue to walk. Turn around and walk the other way, passing the pup. When the rope reaches the end, the pup will be jerked again. He will soon learn that he needs to follow you to not be jerked. Then you can shorten the rope

depending on the breed, I'd start by letting the pup drag a short lease around the house, go slow , and try to be patient it is easy to hurt the dog by yanking on there neck, especially small breeds
