I saw a special about a nazi sub captured with an enigma machine on board.
Somehow due to a politician in Washington DC who was involved with this operation to capture the said sub it was brought up by ways of rivers, canals, and lakes to his home city of Chicago.
Is this true?
Is it open for the public to see?

Yes it is a type VIIC I believe. It is the U-505 and was captured by the US Navy after being forced to the surface on June 6, 1944 off the west coast of Africa. Yes it is open to the public and yes you can go on board. The exterior paint scheme is wrong otherwise it is a WW2 U-boat. Go to uboat.net. They have pics of it.

Yes it is true, yes it is open to the public and, in my opinion, I think it is rather interesting. You should try to go and see it. If I am correct, I think they do a tour on it also. Look up the Museum of Science and Industry/Chicago/IL and that web site should take you there and you can find all the info about the sub there. If you live in or near Chicago (I grew up there and have seen the sub...loved it!!!), you should go out there and see it.

I walked through that sub about 50 years ago, I heard that they had a lot of trouble getting it through the streets, but I was a young child at the time.

The U-505 is on display in Chicago. The only other surviving U-Boat is in Kiel, Germany. I have toured both boats.
