You have learned the hard way not to use over-the-counter flea products on your pet. None of the products available without a prescription are wise to use on pets, including topicals, baths, dips and collars. Not only do they have a high incidence of adverse effects, but they also do not work well. I have seen far too many pets visit our clinic suffering from respiratory distress or other severe reaction from OTC flea medication. And they still have fleas!

The safe, effective flea products are only available by prescription. There are a number of effective medications including Revolution, Advantage and Frontline. I have used all three on my cats at one time or another to prevent fleas. To get rid of an existing flea infestation, I would recommend Advantage.

Treating your pet for fleas is only half the battle. You also need to treat your home. Our clinic uses and recommends a product called Knockout ES Area Treatment. It is a fine mist spray that is easy to apply. Fifteen minutes after application, it is safe to let kids and pets back into the room. Remember to vacuum floors, rugs and upholstery first and launder anything that can be put in the washing machine.

A word about the prescription flea medications listed above... The manufacturers of these products will only sell them to practicing veterinarians and will only guarantee their product if purchased through a veterinary hospital. These products purchased online or at a pet store were acquired dishonestly and may not be reliable. They also may be old or stored in warehouses without controlled temperature and humidity.

hartz, and other brands you get at grocery stores, as well as most flea collers do absolutely nothing. They may smell good to make you think you have done something, but they are worthless, and really should not be sold.
Revolution, Advantage, Frontline anything from a vet is safe and effective. There are also pills and shots. Yes, they are expensive, like 15 dollars a month, but, they work, and great too.
Personally, I like Frontline on cats more(i like K9 advantix on the dogs though) , but Revolution kills worms and all that intestinal jazz too, as well as heartworm. And Revolution for kittens can be used on bunnies too.....

Anyone can tell you the ANY OTC - especially Hartz!! - is not good. Any good flea product will come from the veterinarian! Also, you won't get rid of the fleas if you don't treat the environment. Where to get the treatment? Of coarse! At your veterinarians!!

If your cat already has fleas then go to the vet to get them removed. If you are trying to prevent the cat from getting the fleas at target there are some flea collars. I use them for my cats and they are very lightweight. If your cat does not like the collar go to a vet to get some special meds.

Have a great day!
Best I could do!

Yes. herbal Pennyroyal is good. Tansy is another repellent. I prefer crushed little ancient creatures called diatoms.
The product made from them is called "diatomaceous earth."
It is white, almost a crystal powder. Farmers give it to their animals "to eat" as it kills worms & such (parasites).
I use it to rub into my animals fur. Then I do same with any carpeting. Then I do the complete outdoors. The tiny crystal will CUT through the shell/body of roaches, fleas & the like. They dessicate. (dry out & die). It is non-toxic, safe, just don't breathe in any more dust than you have to. You may kill the ones on the cat, but what about "the outdoors." After 2-3 days you may vacuum up the powder off the carpet.

NEVER use OTC flea products including flea collars..as you found they are dangerous..they can cause serious burns, neurological issues, seizures & death.
The only safe flea products to use are ones you can get from your vet such as Frontline & Advantage.

Definatly Advantage, try it out and see if the cat freaks out again. You can also try a flea comb, but they take awile and never get ALL of the fleas out.

how old is your cat. How much does it weight. These are two things you need to watch when buying flea meds. I use frontline with no problems. You can also try sprinkling garlic on its food this is a home remedies I don't know if it works.I was told by a local pet store.

Advantage from the vet and have them apply it so they can watch her for any reactions. They will also need to weigh her to have the right dosage, you may have used too much of the last stuff on accident.
