All three of my children went to Head start and it was very rewarding. Head start teaches them the basics in skill learning and social activities. Your child will learn to share, make friends, be proud of potty time, structure, rules... This is a great program especially if you find a really good school. Most states have state funded programs and as long as you do not exceed a certain yearly income, you are ensured a seat at a school. But be cautious, you need to study schools like you would study for a test. Have questions already prepared for the teachers and administrators at the school. Look into the classroom at the students. Make sure you make an appointment the first time. And on the second and third visits, when you bring something else they will require, go at different times of the day so that you will be able to see the children in the morning, at nap/recess time, and in the afternoon. I would look at getting her enrolled in the beginning to late parts of April or May. That's the best time here in Louisiana anyway, so it may be the same there where you are. Also you can look up your state's website and you maybe able to find a list of schools available for you. You will also find the necessary documents. Good luck! Cherish the moments, they don't last long. And remember, she will only get one first day at 'big girl school!'

Head Start's famous success is from studies of their original model - where the mom is very involved in the day to day class and is taking classes herself on parenting, money management, etc.
Other than that program, preschool is not good for kids. Kids learn best in the context of a one on one relationship - that is, with mom.
Keep her home at least until age 6 - heck keep her home until college. Preschool just ruins kids love of learning, curiosity, individuality, compassion and turns them into consumers, clique members, and mind-numbed robocitizens.
Preschool is totally not in the interest of any child who has an interested involved mother because preschool does not deliver what a child needs nor does it deliver it in a way a child can use it.

Yes. head start is a great program with very developmentally appropriate practices. Keep her in there next year if you can, too! It will serve her much better than an overly-academically focused public preschool. In head start they learn more than that- they learn about diversity, social skills, and how their behavior affects others. They also learn in ways that are appropriate to their age- through preoperational and sensory activities, instead of those counterproductive worksheets of public preschools that kids can't learn from.

One of my children went to head start. You can find out information from your social worker. They will have addresses and phone numbers of the closest head start to you, and you can call and get information. There were good and bad experiences we dealt with, as I am sure that there are in every situation. My child DID learn quite a bit, and especially learned to interact correctly with other kids his age. He was 4 when he went to preschool. Hope that helps.
