I have done some craft shows outside. I took white wire shelving that you use in the closet. It has a 90degree bend on one side. I made 4 columns by putting two of these together at right angles and zip tied them. Put one on the each of three sides at the bottom with the short part of the bend on the ground. Last I put one across the top on each side of three sides with the short bend on so the 90 degree bend hangs over the front side. and zip tied these to the columns. So you basic all have an box with one side open. I use S hook to hold the stain glass I make on the wire columns and from the top, but you could use dowel rods like one of the other suggestions. I have done shows outside so I have always used tent stakes to make sure the structure was solid. But mine is 9' square. If you made yours smaller it would probably be more rigid, and easier to transport. When your done you just cut the zip ties and stack up the shelves. I would suggest 8' columns in 6'-8' square.

A 1 inch diameter stick with many holes drilled in to fit a lot of 3/16 inch diameter dowels could make a very quick xmas tree particularly if painted green. then with the dowels pulled out of the stem the whole thing would pack away very neatly.

You could probably get a small fake tree that would do the same thing and look better but not pack so small.

You could also knot a series of dowels at a bit more spacing than your ornaments length and hang the whole affair like a curtain showing off row after row of your ornaments. Afterwards the "curtain" would just bunch up to a small space or bag

How about this:Out of foam core posterboard (Office Depot or Staples) cut out 5 or 6 vertical 1/2 profiles of a christmas tree. Get as arty as you can, Hinge them together by gluing the center axis with cloth tape.Fan open for display, fan closed for transport. Paint it green or blue green. This will fold flat, be sturdy, lightweight, sturdy and beautiful.Hard to discribe, I hope you can envision this.

What about a board with hooks that way when the person was looking they wouldn't have to walk around it to see them all, Also it would not be as easy to knock over preventing breakage.
