from what i know of 28 year old men, in my experience, he's got nothing.

This is not a slam...well, maybe on the 28 year olds that I know. Unforturnately, i've only really known losers.

You should now have 3-5% of your desired retirement savings.

You'll work from roughly 16 to 65, or about 50 years. At 28, or 12 years into your 50, you have a quarter of your productive years behind you. On the other hand, you have compound interest on your side and you'll earn twice as much in the last half of your career as in the first half. SO,... what you should have at this point is the basic good habits in place to allow you to successfully save money later in your working years. 3-5% of your desired target savings at 28 represents proof that you have hope of getting there.

So, are you there?

Ok, I will tell you that I am the same age and what I personally think is at least 10,000 that is what I would like to have. He should already own a truck and a car and maybe a house. But maybe not. It really depends.

Sugar, it just varies. It depends on what types of jobs he's had and how much he has been able to put aside. Bottom line is, EVERYONE (adults) should have a savings account of some kind. If he's got anything, he's ahead of many people.

It depends on the guy.
When my husband was 28 he had $20,000 in the bank, we bought a house, had two cars, and a boat.
It's all about money management.

Married or unmarried?

Married - $1.56

Unmarried - perhaps 40 grand, excluding assets? I'm not sure.
