Holy mackerel! 55 bucks??????!!!
A single pack of Polaroid 600 or Spectra should not sell for more than $14.99.

There are no third party film manufacturers for Polaroid instant film. They are the only game in town.

If you're trying to buck the digital trend, why not try a point & shoot 35mm camera? There aren't many to choose from any more. The Olympus Stylus Epic is a fabulous little camera with a good, sharp lens and costs less than $80. Your photos will be much better than a Polaroid instant camera. And they will cost less, even with the price of film and processing.

Unfornately, being cool enough to own polaroid comes at a price. I've looked all over for cheap film, and can not find it. Just got to ask yourself whether or not you think it is worth it. I'm from Australia, and they work out at about $1.50 per photo, which I think is fine. Not sure where you are from, but $55.00 is a lot. Digital photos are a lot cheaper. And by cheaper I mean free. So maybe stick with them.
