Hi guys.
Do you know what's the best compromise LCD to watch standard definition channel (BBC, etc).
I like the Sony Bravia but I was not so impressed at the shop by the image quality on std definition channels. I am not sure how much the reception is important. In my area is very good.
By contrast Samsung and Philips (both 6000:1 contrast), looked much better.
So how can the Sony can have such high score on Cnet?
Please advise.
Many thanks

I don't know about the shop you were in, but I've been very impressed with the Sonys on SD picture. Reception is of the UTMOST importance, and you need to find a store with good reception of SD tv (most stores only have decent digital or even HD quality). If you can, go to a store that sells multiple brands and stand at the distance you intend to view the TV at home. One of the big mistakes people make is going into the store and standing about a foot away from the TVS!

Sony is way overated and people are impressed with the spec. The best way to judge a tv is your own eyes. Samsung make the best lcds. Remember that Sony lcds use the Samsung lcd panel for their tvs too. LCDs have to use their built-in scaler to display standard definition in the lcd native resolution, and that's where most lcds failed except Samsung lcds.

With that television, you may %. up over the air stations with an antenna. what number and which ones relies upon on how close you're to the broadcast towers and how sturdy an antenna you get, outside ones do a extra effective pastime than interior antennas. You plug the antenna into the television and run a channel test in accordance to training contained in the owner's guide. once you've a service service, you're able to get an HD cable or sat. field for a similar fee you pay for an SD field. So i might want to verify that out first, extra HD and extra strong than OTA. Over the air HD will look very strong. SD does not look very strong on HD tvs, yet on a 32" television it would want to be ok.

Have you looked at any Toshiba LCD's?

I've been really impressed with them. They seem to have a very "natural" picture. Most LCD TV's (to my eyes) have unrealistic colour ie. the colours are TOO vivid.

Toshiba TV's also seem to soften the standard definition picture slightly to hide it's obvious shortcomings. Give them a try.

Plus, don't believe the ridiculous contrast claims that are starting to crop up. There is no standard method for measuring contrast ratio and manufacturers are starting to quote, shall we say "optimistic" figures...!
