I know a acouple guys who has an 88 toyota truck and a 89 toyota truck, 88 is a 5 speed, 89 is an automatic, both 4 wheel drive. Is the 4 wheels drive shift pattern on the 5 speed the same as the automatic?

Yes, both shift patterns are the same, just one is mated to an automatic transmission and one to a standard tranny. Both transfer cases are from the same company.

No, they are different. An automatic can be on the steering column or a centre console. Automatics are usually sequential selectors. Manual transmissions require the use of a clutch and the shifter must be placed into the proper position for each gear selection. Requires good coordination.
