What is tolerance?

Can someone please give me a clear definition on tolerance and a good way to demonstrate it at school?

Give and take.
In social terms, tolerance is accepting someone has a different view (republican/democrat, vegetarian/carnivore, atheist/religious)

In engineering, it's how close to a specified value you must have a dimension. Flying at 25,011 feet is "close enough" to flying at 25,000 feet.

Sorry, but to me, Tolerance is synonym of stupidity. Sorry, but I found out for myself later on and I paid dearly for being tolerant.
That does not mean I now am intolerant. I am just neither.
