Orange juice prices, already at historic highs, are expected to climb further as production in Florida's hurricane-ravaged groves bottoms out.
California which also grows oranges has not had the best of seasons lately either.
Crops had low yeilds this past season.
The state of Florida is second only to the country of Brazil in world orange production. To make up the shortfall, wholesalers will likely have to rely more on imports of Brazilian juice, which carry a nearly 30-cent per gallon tariff.
And finally the price of gas has not helped either. Lots of food costs have risen due to the high cost of fuel.

The price of Orange Juice is dependent on the price of oranges. Certain years the orange crop has had problems that has significantly increased the price of orange juice. Strangely enough, the opposite can happen too. Different kinds of oranges are grown for eating vs. drinking. If the eating crop is affected, sometimes the price of the drinking oranges can go down because the farmers sell their eating oranges to the OJ makers.
OJ is high in calories and sugar. You are better off rationing yourself to one or two glasses a day and drinking water the rest of the time. This will make your OJ last longer too!

The price of orange juice is largely determined by the weather and crop yield each year and we've had a few bad years for oranges (hurricaines, early or late frosts, snow, ice, drought, blights and infestations)

Tropicana is not from concentrate, meaning they have to harvest oranges year-round, pasteurize the juice, then ship it all in a timely manner. That costs money.

it just depends on the price of oranges, as well as the location of the groves. florida is one of the big orange-growing states and with the hurricanes over the past few years, many of the orange groves were either damaged or destroyed. thus, the prices shot up.
