Need to replace my Commodore with another family car that is cheap to run and does good mileage per liter of fuel. I am currently looking at Passat and tossing between Diesel and Petrol and not sure if it cjeap to maintain or not. My previous Alfa Romeo was expensive.

The TDI diesel is absolutely the superior choice.

I can't imagine anyone outside of the United States especially, would consider the petrol engine instead.

What on earth for? So you can have a spark ignition system to maintain? So you can get half the fuel economy? So you can have an engine that will last about half as long?

With what you pay for petrol overseas, it's an easy decision. Diesels hold their resale value better because people KNOW they last. Diesels have more driveable torque and deliver their power at low RPM's where you can put it to better use. Better durability, longevitiy and vastly better fuel economy. Modern direct injection diesels like the TDI Passat are scarcely louder than petrol engines, especially at highway speeds!

The diesel requires NO spark plugs or plug wires or any kind of ignition system maintainence of any type. The glow plugs will last at least 100,000 miles. The maintance will be cheaper, filling it with fuel will be cheaper. It's an easy decision made even easier if you test drive an excellent TDI motor and see how well it drives.

I only wish we had more diesel choices here in the United States instead of the thirsty V6 petrol motors that rarely feel as powerful as advertised and the wimpish petrol 4 cylinders that either have no torque or drink fuel like crazy.

I'm your man. I've sold VW for 4 years and I own a Passat and have owned a Touareg. I love both. If you are talking Pre owned go Certified at a VW dealer. You get a rate as low as 2.9% and a 2yr bumper to bumper on us.

The TDI is nice but pricey. Actually I recommend the gas engine 1.8t since the TDI is only 10 mpg better and will cost you usually about 7k more than a gas powered sibling. The V6 is underpowered and consumes too much fuel in the old body B5 Passat (99-05) But the saftey and reliability is great. Though you can find a good CPO for about 15k which is a GLX '02.

I have 3 young kids and I feel better with them in the Passat than I do in My 7 seater 4X4 Durango. Its a great family car. Side airbags and ABS are standard as is ASR or ESP traction control. You could also put thought into a new Jetta 2.5, as its now the same size as the old Passat was.

If you are looking for a new 2007, try to find an 06, as I can take off about 4 grand. If not, the 07 will be closer to sticker, but well worth it. Comes in a 2.0T giving 207 HP or a 281 HP 3.6L V6, both with a DSG 6 speed tranny. Either is great but the Turbo is all you need. No TDI for 2007, will return as a joint venture with Mercedes BlueTech in 2008.

Passat is the ONLY car EVER to score a PERFECT score on a IIHS crash test. The only one. Resale is the BEST of any non luxury maker, including Toyota or Honda. Rated #1 family sedan by JD power for 7 years running. In summary, buy it.... Fast!!!!

Another nice option is a Hyundai Sonata. Believe it or not. Great safety, great dependability, good gas mileage, good quality, OUTSTANDING warranty. I have to rank this as my #2.

Matintenence wont kill you on any VW. Oil change every 6 mos, sealed 100k tranny, etc.

compared to your alfa, it wont be too bad. I do highly suggest the diesel (i dont know what all versions of it you get down there). Theyre more reliable and get quite a bit better mileage. I personally would go with something made by either lexus or toyota (camry or carolla or ES300 or similar). Theyre durable, cheap, good on gas, easy to find, and overall great cars. Their main downside is that theyre just not very exciting.

Just for reference, im a huge VW guy.

Iam a big vw enthusiest for some 16 years now and the vw passat variant "station wagon" would be perfect for you. Its sporty looking and very good on gas milage. Very comfortable interior. Just what you need for that big family of yours.

The car itself is not so bad. I suggest you get petrol and not diesel as diesel cars are bit loud. Mileage and performance is good.

i am not a VW fan at all, anyone i have known that had a VW was sorry they had one.....try looking at the Accura TL
i have always owned Ford with the exception of a toyota celica (loved it) but i have had the TL for almost 6 months and i love it.
i get 34 mpg on the highway and combined with town driving average is 25. i traded my expedition in on the TL in the truck i got 17 highway and town combined...

sounds like slave cylinder has had it. although if the noise is there when in neutral with the clutch out and goes when pressed then the flywheel is gone too. expensive if you take it to the dealers. my advice is take it to a back street garage and get it fixed there for half the price.its not your drive shafts cause your car wouldnt drive if theyed gone

It's a good car. And it's considered not as expensive as many other German cars.
