They are called anal glands and are used to coat the stool as it comes out, leaving his own special scent. As a dog groomer it was part of the job to empty the anal glands. I did it while the dog was in the bathtub so I could wash the stuff off quickly.

It takes the 'push' of pooing to leave a trace amount on the stool.

They don't just squirt fluid like a skunk or smeared like a ferret.

It does happen from time to time if the dog has soft stool that day, usually due to illness or rich foods. Usually, though, there is not a problem. You can change a dog's food if they are having soft stool and find one that suits them better. There have been times, though, when I've had to rush my dog straight to the bathroom and wipe off his bum. Such is life with pets - not much different than having a baby, I'm afraid!

What you are referring to is anal gland excrement. Dogs and cats have anal sacs and CAN squirt them when afraid and it STINKS!!!!
If you pet is leaking anal glands 'juice' as we call it them you should be concerned with food allergies. When an animal has an allergy or food intolerance the mucus builds up more quickly in areas such as anal glands, throats, and even ears have trouble.
Normally after having a BM your pet will have expressed them and they won't be a problem. Also, this is one of man reasons you pet grooms their bottom.
Again if leaking is a problem so see your vet and change to a high quality food to help lower the mucus machine!

They should not have anything on ther anus, so long as there is nothing wrong with the dog, an you are feeding it properly. And as gross as it sounds dogs use there tongues as toilet paper. If they feel there is something wrong.

My dog doesn't, she doesn't get shoo-shoo on her fur either.
and yuck dogs licking their butts are just nasty. I must have a super great dog cuz she never licks her butt or privates. She licks her paws like a cat. I'm with her all the time so I know she doesn't do it when I'm not looking either.

That was my first question when I got my puppy. My friend told me the first day I got her that they "pinch it off!!!" for 3 months I have witnessed my pup pinching her poo. And if there is a rare moment where it's runny, I suggest having something to wipe it...

I've never noticed it on my dogs butt before and she sits on my lap all the time. I know my cats get it from time to time but so far, none on the pup.

Yes, and the dog's owner wipes it off with a wet towel.
