I need a good recipe to make with a 6th grade class studying fractions. The period is 45 minutes long. I'm thinking about something along the lines of cookies, brownies, or friendship bread.

This is called Pinch Me Bread, Monkey Bread, or Pull-Aparts

3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes (10 per tube)
2/3 cup white sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup walnut and/or pecan pieces and/or raisins

Take 3 packages of buttermilk biscuit tubes (10 per roll) and cut each roll into quarters. Mix sugar and cinnamon into a shallow bowl. Drop roll pieces one at a time into the sugar mix and roll around to lightly coat. Drop sugar-coated pieces into a well buttered Bundt pan. (Don't smash the pieces.) Put the left-over sugar/cinnamon mix and 1/2 cup packed brown sugar and 1/2 cup of butter (1 stick) into a small saucepan. Melt the butter and stir until the sugar is disolved. Remove from heat immediately. Carefully pour over the roll pieces.

Bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.

Cool slightly in an upright position, then tip pan over onto a plate to remove monkey bread. Do not cut as the pieces just pull apart.

You can also add either raisins, or coarsely chopped walnuts or pecans, or any combination thereof which amounts to about one cup, if none of your students are allergic. If you do, you need 1 Cup nuts, raisins or any combination, divided. Sprinkle one third of the nut/raisins/nut-raisin mix into the Bundt pan before you begin adding the biscuit pieces. After adding each layer of biscuit pieces, sprinkle with some nuts/raisins/nut-raisin mix. If any are left, add to the brown sugar/butter mix, stir until coated then pour over the roll pieces.

c'mon people, we're Talking about FRACTIONS!

I would Definitely do a Fruit Pizza! Who doesn't love those?!??!

all you do is buy :
a roll of pre-made sugar cookie dough
1 pkg Cream Cheese
1/3 C of Sugar
1/2 Tsp Vanilla
2 Medium Banana's
2 tsp Lemon juice
Different fruits that are in season: Mandarin oranges, Strawberries, pineapple chunks, blueberries, kiwi's... Any fruit that you like.

Press the cookie dough on a round pizza like pan, bake at 375 for about 8 minutes, cool completely... ( i suggest making it and bringing it to the class)

in mixing bowl beat cream cheese, sugar, vanilla... spread over crust like an icing
-Toss bananas w/ Lemon juice
and arrange the remaining fruits however you like
-Refridge for 1 hour... Honestly... I wouldn't wait that long, because i think its ready as soon as you make it.

This is a great item to use for fractions because you can cut it however you like, and the recipe is a perfect tart treat that everyone should love!

do something that can be done by the "parts" method (i.e 3 parts flour, 1 part sugar, 2 parts water, etc.). That way you can start out with a quantity of one thing, say 2/3 c. of sugar, and ask the class to figure out the measurements for the other components. quick bread recipes or muffin recipes are usually good for this sort of thing since the base ingredients tend to scale relatively easy. just be careful with the leavening, since it doesn't always scale up (or down) in the same manner as the base recipe. allrecipes.com has a feature that allows you to scale many of the recipes found there.

Do you want to bake from scratch? You may just want to go with a box brownie mix.
Perhaps a quick bread as yeast breads need time to rise (2x) before baking. You will not likley have time for that.

Here is a simple quick bread and brownie recipe:

Banana Bread
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup white sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 cup butter, melted
3 bananas, mashed

1 Grease and flour two 7x3 inch loaf pans. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2 In one bowl, whisk together flour, soda, salt, and sugar. Mix in slightly beaten eggs, melted butter, and mashed bananas. Stir in nuts if desired. Pour into prepared pans.
3 Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 1 hour, or until a wooden toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Servings: 16
Yield: 2 - 7x3 inch loaves.
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 1 hour
Ready in: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Chewiest Brownies (chosen best brownie by another Y! answers member)
"Rich chocolate chewy brownies, not cakey at all!"
1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup melted butter
2 cups white sugar
2 eggs 1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup confectioners' sugar for decoration

1 Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Line one 9x13 inch pan with greased parchment paper.
2 Combine the cocoa, melted butter, sugar, eggs, salt , flour and vanilla. Mix until well combined. It should be very thick and sticky.
3 Spread mixture into the prepared pan. Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 30 minutes. Cool completely before cutting into squares.
Servings: 24

Good luck for a yummy fractions lesson! Thats one way to learn to love math. Do you plan to have them double the recipe (or halve it)?

This has a variety of fractions.

Barbecue Sauce

1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion (1 large onion)
1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup tomato paste (10 ounces)
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup honey
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
1 cup Dijon mustard
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 cup hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1/2 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes

In a large saucepan on low heat, saute the onions and garlic with the vegetable oil for 10 to 15 minutes, until the onions are translucent but not browned. Add the tomato paste, vinegar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, chili powder, cumin, and red pepper flakes. Simmer uncovered on low heat for 30 minutes. Use immediately or store in the refrigerator.
