You are used to math in a base 10 system, where all numbers are made up of only 10 digits. The computer turns ALL information it receives into a base 2 system (0 and 1). It can assign a different pattern of 0 and 1 to everything. Think of it as morse code which only used dots and dashes to spell out everything.

Puppetman is correct. Don't forget though, that when writing a program, you use the pattern of 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128, etc...
