ve got a windows XP cd and its not working booting from that, so thats why im using DOS so how would i boot and use DOS without being on C: drive?

I mean the Xp CD says that it cant fromat C: because it contains files needed for setup

And how would i make a DOS cd and use it?

Use a DOS boot floppy if you have a floppy disk drive. Or a DOS boot CD.

But when you say 'its not working booting from that', how is it not working - are you getting an error message, a blank screen, what?

You could use a mini DOS boot floppy:

Or try a bootable CD with basic OS files on it, like Linux's bootable mini CD:

About your Windows XP CD. If the Windows XP isn't booting, you need to find out why. Is the CD player dead? This was the cause in my latest adventure. Try booting into the BIOS and selecting the boot option to boot first from CD-ROM or "Optical Drive", (this is just a new fancy name for a CD-ROM drive).

Make a dos boot disk and then boot from that.

start up menu, click run and type cmd and enter.
