Our office Xmas party was a complete disaster. Sad thing is that everyone had been taking about it for weeks and how great it would be, what with the wide range of ethnic people (it really is like the UN with so many different nationalities). Everything was going fine, but when it was time to do select and eat the food a nasty fight ensued. Someone suggested to a Finnish man that he try some of the caesar salad, to which he replied "What, I don't eat rabbit food"...and went on and on about how it should have been a meat dish instead. The lady who made the food was in ear shot and actually took her hand and THREW a handful of the salad at the guy and went storming out of the room to the washroom. Half the party emptied to try to comfort her....the whole thing went down hill from there. People quickly ate and left........the office Xmas gifts were given out the next day by the mail clerk. Since then the morale in the office has been terrible. I guess all I can say about this is that you need to realize that little flare ups can occur when cultures mix. Too bad because it all seemed like such a good idea. I doubt we will have any celebrations at all next year. Anybody else have any experiences like this???

Sounds like a group of immature people in your office. When someone makes a dish, and one finds it to be unappealing, well you can refuse without being a smart mouth. But even though the guy was a smart mouth did not give that woman an excuse to throw food and walk out like a big baby. If I was the management there, I would address the whole group and just state that since we has such a fiasco on the last pot-luck we will not have anymore for a while. Then I would privately address the ones who acted up. May even write them up for unprofessional behavior.

I've learned to eat before the potluck and not touch the food. I don't know what's in it. But here's another thing. At a pizza party, where about 15 different types of pizza were being served, I saw a person walk to each pizza and pick up a few of the toppings with her fingers, then walk to the next pizza. Some people are just animals when it comes to free food. I got the hell out of that pizza party pronto!!! If at all possible, I just make an appearance at office parties of any kind. They are a recipe for disaster.

I have to admit, there was some very immature behavior going on there. Mr. Carnivore could have just politely refused instead of calling it "rabbit food". I had something similar happen to me at a potluck luncheon when I brought a vegetable lasagna(with spinach and broccoli- no meat). Some old-school Italian guy called out rudely, "Why would anyone make a lasagna without the sausage? No one appreciates doing food right anymore." I was sure he was going to get a knuckle sandwich on the spot from the vegetarian guy seated next to him.

Oh yes. I work in a multi-cultural situation also. But for the most part the people get along pretty good, I think we are all pretty tolerant of each other. But there is never a dull minute either.I think the Finnish guy was quite rude with his comment about the salad, or if it was said in fun, then the lady was too sensitive.

No, mine was !
We had a pot luck barbeque, and everyone brought a dish. We ate outside, and I had provided those little net umbrella covers to keep the flies off. Unfortunately, 2 people thought they were only decorative, and wouldn't replace them properly. The dishes were iced, to keep them cool, but after an hour, a friend was chowing into the ham and cheese and only noticed when she was almost finished, that there were maggots crawling on her ham. Bleeeechh !!! Everyone had eaten the ham - which was fresh from the grocery store, plus it was sealed, and was only cut the hour before.
She didn't die - but she sure wanted to !

Well not at a company party. But holiday family dinners are always fun at our place! My aunt, then 40, pulled her shirt up in the middle of dinner one time and asked her brand new stepfather, "Which one of these do you like better?"
Ah, such awesome childhood memories...
