I need to get people in my community to give dog/cat food and old pet carriers/cages and stuff like that. I want to get an idea but i can't think of one that would get the most to the shelter...

Besides trying PetsMart, try the smaller "Mom and Pop" pet stores. You may have a better chance of leaving your flyers with the smaller stores than with the big box stores (many have policies about solicitations).

Other places would be the community bulletin boards at local grocery stores and libraries. Some stores may allow you to put up a table to distribute information. You could have a donor jar for people who don't have carriers but would like to give some cash.

Are you in school? If so, ask your principal if you can put out a table in the cafeteria or wherever clubs/groups are allowed to "solicit" for their causes. Advertise in the school paper or use the daily announcements to publicize your cause.

Local vets may be able to help as well- also try the animal grooming businesses. You may get a lot response from those places.

Good luck. It's a great idea!

First thing that you need to do is get more organized. What do you want to accomplish, have you already opened the shelter, or are you opening a shelter? Next search for local foundations that may be able to help support your cause. The ASCPA and StateSPCAs often offer grants to those who need help with animal shelters. Then distribute flyers on a nice day durring a busy weekend on Cars that are parked in front of Pet Stores. Make sure it is a Nice day, and not rainy. Other wise people will associate your animal shelter with the pain they had taking wet flyers off thier windshields. Also, participate in various community events. Here in Columbus, Ohio the Human society has a "Mingle with the Mutts" and invite other shelters to bring thier animals for adoption also. There are also different Humane Societies that will provide grant funding for your shelter.
Also, write to major pet supply manufacurers marketing departments, you would be surprised at what you can get for free from them just by asking, and showing thier logo on your marketing supplies.

Good Luck.

You should go to a place like Pet Smart, where people go to buy supplies for their pets. Everyone going in that store likely has pets they love and would be sympathetic to your cause. Stand out front with a flyer explaining your project and hand it to them when they are on their way in. They will likely emerge with a bag of dog/cat food for you.

You could state in your flyer that you are looking for donations for the other items and leave a line for them to write in their phone number if they want to donate any of those items. You may get a handful of flyers with phone numbers for donations. You can then call them and arrange for pick-up.

Worth a shot! (Good luck)

Try pet smart, or any local pet store as well as vet offices
Also try your local church, or religious place. I know at my church we do a drive for animal shelters as well as homeless shelters. just ask if its okay with the pastor

As a thank you you could write them a letter or make a big banner that says thank you! with tons of dogs cats and other animals that the shelter resuced
