i don't like needles either. specifically hypodermic needles that you get shots with and have blood drawn with. they make me feel queasy. BUT last year i had about 15 hours of tattoo work done and this weekend and i am having a couple of hours done so it's really not the same thing. the pain is all relative. if you keep a positive attitude, chew some gum and bring a friend to talk to you then i think you'll be fine with the pain. good luck.

Don't stop because you're afraid of needles.
Tattoos aren't a piercing pain. Its more annoying and has a burning sensation. Sourt of like drawing out your fingernail on your skin with some pressure. Just stingy.
Also, if you don't know whether or not you're prepared, don't get one just yet. Wait to get the tattoo until you're ready and really antisipating it.
They hurt, but its not anything I'm sure you won't be able to handle. I nice thing too is every time your artist lifts the machine, the pain stops. So you're not really going through this long drawn out annoyance.
Maybe stop in the shop and ask if you can observe someone getting a tattoo just to get a feel of how they go. I'm sure they'll let you if the person getting tattooed doesn't mind.
Good luck!
(Tattoos don't change mature persons perception of you. If someone looks down on you for it, its not someone to have involved in your life, so don't worry about that aspect).

Hi there I am from the old school .....years ago the only people I saw with tattoos were servicemen who were in the Navy. They had them on their arms mostly names of their girlfriends or palm trees if they were stationed on the islands....so not until the early 90's did I see the tattoo rage starting up and so popular. To answer your question if I were young I'd stop and think..." how will this look on my body when I'm 45 or 50 years young/old....will it sag or look wrinkled...if my skin is aging. When you are young you want to be like your friends ....or do it for yourself..but as time passes your body will change and you might wish it was not done....what about getting something done that is not permanent or use those wash off kind...no one would know..only you.....best wishes from mama jazzy geri...happy new year!

ok well if you just found out that it wil hurt...umm to be honest...how did you think they were going to put a tattoo on you?
of course it will hurt...but ppls pain tolerance differs from others. and remember PAIN IS TEMPORARY...its not as bad as some make it seem.
and as far as needle-phobia...i had it too...and well if you want it bad enough you wont care much for the needle...just make sure you are doing it for you and not because its a trend thing...because keep in mind that its a tattoo that will stay on you forever...just go to a reputable shop and ask some artists about experiences and what they would see best for you.

If you want a tattoo..wait until you get a little older. I was 29 when I got mine. Thank God, too. Instead of getting a tattoo to be cool, I got it to symbolize my family. It means so much more to me. It is a mature decision. And who cares if your kids and grand kids see it..it will be a part of you. It's all part of being an individual, not closeminded.

As for the pain, it does hurt. However, the main source of pain is the outline (because it is darker). That's something also to think about-how much outline do you want. But when, the shading is done, it feels like an itch that is being scratched. Nothing to it. No pain afterwards, either.

Best of luck.

This is just one opinion, but do yourself a favor and hold off on getting a tattoo for now. You may find that at some time in the near future you really don't want one, and if that occurs after you've already gotten one, it's going to be a little too late. I think they market temporary tattoos now anyway, so why not try one of those, and see how you like it first. If you don't, at least it's not going to be permanent.

I went with two friends when they got tattoos. It does hurt, and sometimes bleeds if you get it certain places it hurts more than others. You just have to remember you will have it for the rest of your life, unless you pay for expensive painful removal of it. I just imagine what it will look like when you are 65 and your skin is saggier than it is now. I would make sure you really want one. If you don't like needles I would caution you. Maybe go to a tattoo place and watch other people. You are the one who has to have the procedure done.

I'm afraid of needles too. (I passed out when I got my belly button pirced.) The pain of a tattoo is nothing like getting a shot. It feels more like a needle scraping across your skin, then it burns for like an hour afterward. I was really nervous before getting mine but the he started it and I was like" thats it"

There is nothing wrong with feeling pain or being afraid of pain. If you want one badly enough you'll find it within yourself to forget about the pain and get a tattoo. Something I did for my kid sister when she was old enough(and legally able to get away with it!!) to get a tattoo was I went with her and held her hand and talked to her the whole time. The lady doing her tattoo not only worked faster, she did a kick a$$ job too!!

First, it depends on why you want to get one. Second, there is no harm in waiting - IF you really want one. If you really want one, waiting for a while will not stop you from getting it eventually. My first tat is something that I thought about for over 5 years before I got it. And I haven't regreted any of the 13 I've gotten since then...
