I do not want my daughter to be christened as her father and i are not religious, and would rather she made her own choices about religion. A freind told me that if she isnt christened, when she dies she cannot have a headstone at her grave, surely this cant be right? considering you have to buy them.

First of all, it's really awesome that you'll let your daughter make her own decisions about her religion. I really wish I hadn't had Christianity forced on me, especially since I've figured it was wrong for me.

Secondly, there aren't restrictions on who gets a headstone. I mean, it's not a controlled substance. I don't know where your friend got that information, but he/she might have meant specifically Christian cemetaries.

You are thinking about a headstone for a girl that is not old enough to make up her own mind, hummmm.

Cemetaries do not ask if someone has been christened.

Thinking about headstones, coffins and cemetaries reminds me of a joke.

Once LBJ went to a cemetary to by a plot and a casket, and he told them he wanted the cheapest thing they had.
They said, but Lyndon, surely you do not want to be buried like a pauper.
Lyndon said, I will only be in it three days and three nights.

That is not true. When someone dies and you go to the funeral home, they do not ask you to produce any kind of proof of being christened or anything else like that. As long as you are paying for it, you pretty much write what you choose to write as well. The only time that might apply is if the cemetery is owned by a church.

do not believe what your friend says. sounds to me your friend is talking through their backside. it doesn't matter whether you have been christened or not. it is not the church that pays for or puts up the headstone. it is yourselves that would have it paid for and placed on your daughters grave. it also sounds to me that some might like to get your daughter christened. but i am pleased you are giving your daughter freedom of choice. in that you are very wise.

That is surely a lie. I think you decision to allow you daughter to decide is a good one. I have not heard of anywhere in the bible where it specifies that you child has to be christened anyway. But you can always check it out for yourself. And anyone can have a headstone if they can pay for it.

No. A headstone is an object of choice and has nothing to do with religious preference.

I have never heard of being unable to have a headstone if not christened, but I think you would be buried in the unconsecrated part of the graveyard.

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. I think it just depends on what kind of grave yard you're buried in. Some allow grave stones, and some don't. (The ones that don't mainly don't because they want it to be easier to mow the grass. They usually do have flat stones that mark the grave, but not tall, upright headstones.) I've never heard that you couldn't have one if you wern't cristened though.

Either your friend is misinformed or that was a mean comment to make. I don't think headstones come from a religious source, I think they are just picked out and bought... Why would it only relate to the christian religion? Weird.
