I was going to say a Dutch girl or a Mule, but then I also ran into the problem with the word object. Your problem is to find an object which is quiet (most of the time), stubborn and impulsive. How about a volcano? Montserrat is also a current event.
-- If volcano's don't appeal to you I'm back to Dutch girls; because I'm allergic to mules and not that hot on volcano's..
