Many reasons. Some are looking for hope, some are searching for understanding, others ask to gain knowledge before a doctors visit, some do it for fun, others do it out of fear. Is it serious? could be from another persons point of view.
Those that have gained knowledge of a particular subject might be able to answer a question that a person has already asked, but did not understand the answer (doctors are famous for using scientific terms that many don't understand and most doctors will not even bother telling a person much about their health issue).
Just because a doctor holds a degree in being "book smart" doesn't mean an average "joe" can't answer the question- fact is, if ones experienced the issue, they are more likely to understand the feelings involved and are able to explain in a more casual format.
*Randy-dear Randy...your so misinformed. Yes, there is a thing such as hypochondria, but others are actually ill and one can certainly classify hypochondria as a disease itself. As for the psychiatry world and the drug use, I tend to agree with you. However-Psych's aren't to book smart when it comes to the malfunctioning brain. Many things can cause a person to take medications for their mental illness-hypochondria or not. The majority of those that are ill actually have derpession, panic attacks as well as other diseases that affect the CNS system as a bi-directional issue. Mainly viral infections-whether or not they are bacteria, viral, RNA, DNA- infections do pass the blood brain barrier and cause an upset in the brains chemical makeup and how it communicates. Many folks aren't aware of their disease because they are told "it's just depression". Many end up on drugs they do not need because they aren't told the truth. Most docs however aren't smart enough to realize that mental disease is always caused by either trauma or something physical-like the environment, or infection. So the people end up taking medications that do more harm in the long run (changes how the brain relates over time, hence the need to prolong the drugs used or drugs changed). Infections can not be cured by antidepressants-virus's or bacteria are much smarter than zoloft.

Let's go back in time just a bit. Most so-called doctors of prior centuries were barbers and veterinarians. hmmm.
Even Inca and Mayan "non-doctors" were somehow intelligent enough to drill into the cranial cavity (head) to relieve the pressure of subdural hematomas. Hmmm. Non-doctors.
It seems we have some real issues about titles, degrees & such. Do you know that worldwide PLUMBERS save more lives than all doctors? How? By initiating and maintaining healthy living conditions. being sanitary. Giving clean water via wells. Hmmm. Non- doctors.
When I was drafted eons ago, then volunteered and became a Spec forces medic (Aidman) we delivered babies; did traumatic amputations; burn debridement; removed bullets; performed diagnosois and prescribed treatment. Young medics. Yes, we were usually quite intelligent; lots of drive ; fearless, etc. Heck, who else jumps out of planes.....
Check stats. Doctors KILL thousands of people through malpractice and misdiagnosois. Hmmm. They kill more than guns do in our society, right here in America.
So for all you misguided doctor-worshippers, maybe you will be fortunate enough to be the next one "they are able to Practice medicine on." (key word : Practice).

I have to agree with what Andy says, but, in addition, we're so eager to get a better deal on anything we have to purchase, including the so very expensive medical area, that we throw out to the public questions that might best be saved for someone with an M.D. or R.N., etc., attached to their names, but, we shop. Having been in the psychiatric / mental health field for 20+ years, I have seen some of the most extravagant composition of prescribed medications that our clients took, simply because someone else in the family took them and said they were okay, and I wonder how so many people stay alive. I've seen that very thing happen here. Good observation. God Bless you.

As long as we talk to our doctors too, then hearing other peoples experience and opinions about things doesn't hurt. And some people who answer the questions may actually be doctors or have good knowledge of the subject.
But I think if your point is that non doctors shouldn't take the place of talking to your doctor then I think you're 100% right.

I don't know. I have a question about non doctors myself.
Some stay home wives and mothers will say that they deserve to be paid enormous amounts of money because they are chiefs, doctors, etc. in the household. But they're not. They don't have degrees in these professions and any knowledge and abilities they have concerning them are rather limited. So where do they get off being so arrogant? Why do people who don't have the appropriate knowledge and skills act like they do?

I have no idea why people post medical questions on here. I think perhaps they are looking for people in similar situations. I hope so anyway.

I think it's mostly because people want to know if someone has had or gone through the same thing. Thay way, they can compare and have questions to ask their own physicians.

because it is cheaper to ask someone who may have had the same condition as you than it is to actually pay to go to a doctor for them to tell you you're a hypocondriact
