Don't be ridiculous, you don't have to count calories for a twelve year old boy.
Give him healthy food and the calories will work themselves out. At this rate he'll grow up to have an eating disorder be careful.
For example:
Unsweetened cereal with chopped banana or other fruit is healthy. Hard boiled eggs with pitta bread is healthy. Porrige with honey etc etc.

It all depends on the cereal. Some 12 yr old boys are growing rapidly and will eat amazingly huge amounts especially if they're active. We are talking about 3000-4000 calories a day being a distinct possibility. You'll have to read the box to see how many calories are in his particular breakfast favorites. The real question is if they're overweight or not. Ask the kid's pediatrician--they're the best judge of too much or not enough. If they're active and slim let him eat away--if he's overweight and underactive make sure he's slicing up some fruit in his cereal and adding skim milk!

I agree with the first answer, don't worry about calories, unless the 12 year old boy your referring to is overweight.
Cereal is great, and just remember to not give too much of the really sugar covered products. Nutritional information is available on every box.

cereals can range in calorie count depending on how much fat and sugar they have! healthy cereals like total, total raisin bran, special k (all flavors), and chex have less than 180 calories (not including milk).
a 12 year old boy should only be concerned with sugar content, not calories. stay away from cocoa puffs and fruity pebbles and stick with something a little more healthy. it should be fine.
fruit on the side is not a bad idea, either!
