*Opening doors is a very useful trick you can teach your dog... it might save your life in the future if you can't yourself reach the door. Or, if the door is locked from the outside (if the lock is a push in lock, and if your dog was on the other side) and you're trapped, it could open the door, and you could get out. The only downside to this trick is that your dog will always be opening doors when you don't want them to, such as, if you're in the restroom... need I say more?
*Also commands like sit, stay, down, heel, come, leave, wait, take it, get 'em, stop!, no!, etc... are good for your dog to know as well.

It's not a trick nor a command but it is the first thing that I teach my Puppy Kindergarten students. People are always first. If you are not always first then you have no status and your dog is the boss in your house. Teach your dog to follow you through doorways, all doorways. Stand and wait and reposition your pet as often as you have to, until you can go through any door or narrow passage FIRST. When you find that your dog is dropping back a step to allow you to go first then you have status over the dog. You're TOP DOG! Now you can teach him anything that you want to. The most important command COME and my most fun trick WAVE BYE-BYE. Good luck.

"Stop!" and "Stay" are probably the most important, you want to be able to stop your dog if it gets loose and starts running after something.. However any "trick" that you can teach your dog will do nothing but good, it will teach the dog to listen to you and let him know that you are the boss..

Come is by far the most useful and important trick for any dog to know... Your dog should stop anything he is doing and immediately, without hesitation, come to you when you say 'come' or whatever your command word is.
If your dog can't come to you very quickly without being distracted he is always at risk...

I want to teach my dog to wipe her feet on the doormat, I saw someone do it at the puppy training class I went to. But our dog isn't bad though, she can do some other stuff, she comes when she's called and other than that I'm not too fussed!

Sit, stay, and off. Every dog should know those basic commands. They're not "tricks," but they do make for a much more polite companion.

When you say trick do you just mean any command? If so stay and come are but if you just mean fun tricks these are my favorite beg then dance and paw but I think there are some better tricks.

The best thing to teach your dog is to come to you when called.
