Look in your local library for Nov'06 Consumer Reports, under Super Zooms. I would think the Fugifilm, Sony, and Canon cameras would fit your bill.

I like the look of the new Fuji S600 / S6500 depending on what country you are from. I had an S7000 and it was brilliant. Sadly my S9500 did not produce clear shots, but the 6MP sensor used in the S7000 & S6000 seem to be excellent.
