Depends. Fresh eggs are good for more than a month. Eggs you buy at the grocery store are good for longer than the sell by date. The only way to tell is to crack the egg. Crack it into a seperate container than the bowl you are using for the cupcakes. You will know if it's bad because bad eggs smell terrible. Older eggs will produce less fluffy cupcakes, though, even if they are still good.

You should use the eggs within a few days of the 'Sell by' date. Eggs are perishable items and will go bad (one of the reasons they require refrigeration). Also, in baking they are used for leavening (making the product rise), so the older they are then the less leavening power they will have (they won't work as well. In your case, the cupcakes will rise less than with fresh eggs).

We just had this covered on our local television station. The expiration date is actually the date the store has to get rid of them by. They really can last (as long as they have been in the fridge) for 4 weeks after the date on the carton. To find out if the eggs are bad before you use them, cook or boil them, you can drop them into a pan of water. If they float, they are bad. Discard them, otherwise they should be fine. Once you crack them open, if they smell, obviously, throw them out....but generally, using their guidelines , you should be fine per above instructions. Happy Baking!

eggs, if kept in the refrigerator, will generally stay good for a week, maybe a little more, past the sell by date. but it's not a good idea to even tempt fate. if your eggs are past the date, you would be better off just getting some fresh ones.

Yes Eggs do go bad. you have to be careful. The best way is when you crak that egg open and you see a lot of white foggy film completely on the outside of the Yolk and nothing clear...that eggs is bad.

Put an egg in a glass and fill it with water. If it floats it's stale.
If it stays on the bottom it's still fresh. (gasses are created once the egg starts to get old, hence the floating)

They can go bad but generally they have to be really, really old to go bad if they've been refridgerated properly. Crack one open, if it stinks don't use it. If it smells like nothing then go ahead and use it. If you're putting it in a cupcake any food poisoning danger will be cooked out of it.

The best way to tell if they're good is with your nose. You'll be baking them in an oven and to a high enough temp. as to kill bacteria. They shouldn't smell like anything. If there's a stinky smell, toss em.

I would not use them if the sell by date is more than a week ago.
