there is value to it. not everyone died of every disease before modern medicine 'arrived'... that means people used herbal and natural remedies and were able to cure or treat illness. many people still use these treatments or use them in combination with more conventional medicines.

Most pharmaceutical development is due to investigating claims of traditional herbal medicine and isolating the active components. Without this knowledge future treatments for diseases may not be found.

It's simple: some people simply don't have access to the medicine and technology of the city, and it is useful for those who normally do but find themselves in urgent situations where it is not available.
Furthermore, most "modern" medicinal drugs come from old herbal formulas and variations thereof.
