Use a puppy shampoo at first, easy on the skin, won't dry it out.

For a maltese, you would want to use a "Blueing" shampoo made for white dogs. It will whiten the coat and make your puppy look "So fresh and so clean, clean".

Tip: Add a drop of mineral oil to the eyes before bathing. It will help keep the shampoo from burning their eyes.

MaLtese. Have your dog groomed professionally. It costs less than a manicure and they will keep the hair cut, cleaned and white, as well as brush the teeth, pluck the ear hair and trim the nails.

Maltese are high maintenance dogs, why did you decide on this breed? Really am curious.

If you do groom your dog at home, use whitening shampoo for the coat and miracle eyes around the eyes. These dogs have an enzyme in their fluids which turns their coat pink to red. There is a solution, miracle eyes, which fades it out with regular use.

Be sure to blow dry and brush out your dog's hair each time you wash it, this hair gets matted up very quickly. Brush it every day or it will knot up fast.

like I said, high maintenance dogs, not usually just picked out randomly as a pet, not without prior exposure to the breed.
