Well...what are her/his hobbies what does she do??? Umm...every teen loves iPods, maybe their own tv or stereo. Of course if it is a girl a meaningful piece of jewelry like a monogrammed necklace. Gold earrings or pearls are something.

I suggest asking your child what he/she would like most.
Some kids dont even like having parties because it reminds them that they are growing up too fast. Some like parties because it reminds them they are this much closer getting a life.
For party ideas, if your big on family, have a family party separate from a friend party for your child. Mixing friends and family isnt always a good idea because cousins and friends can fight for attention from your child.
As for gift ideas, the best gift is money that way they can choose to either use it on a car, college, or anything else. And if you do choose on giving money as a gift, make sure you leave a little note inside the card to spend thier money wisely because nothing in life is free.
For places for a party, at home is always best. Its cheaper and easier, but cleanup is always hard. However, everyone will feel more comfortable at home, especially your child.

if you are not thinking of doing this party at home, try a park area with super great shelter and do a potluck style with family members helping supply some of the eats.
have the regular hot dogs and hamburgers with good supply of buns that could also be used with ham or shredded chicken. veggie plate, salads both green leaf and pasta, chips, assorted drinks, fruit, and cake -either one half/half or two separate(chocolate/white)
use lots of color and sparkle in plates and table linens, big playful center pieces; including school colors.
a picture board of your child's travel through school and lots of their friends thrown in for an all around look. don't forget some of the school pictures with any big wins, sports, honors, etc.
the usual run is a few hours, music is a must and casual attire with a bit of flare works best.
remember that the graduate is considered a "host/hostess"
in the party along with the parent/s, so make sure you talk over all ideas and plan it together, it will be a wonderful event to remember.
take LOTS of pictures and make sure to put everything in a scrapbook, which makes a terrific gift.
