I was not born in America so I technically have a foreign name given to me by my parents. This is the name that appears on my citizenship record, passport, and Social Security card. But my family moved to America really long ago like when I was still a baby and my parents also gave me an American name. This is the name that appears on all my school records since kindergarten and all my friends, teachers and people who I speak English with call me by my American name. I'm graduating from high school this summer and applying for colleges. I already filled out college apps with my American name since its what appears on my school, transcript and GPA records, but I also used my SS# which has the foreign name because colleges and financial aid requires SS#. What is gonna happen? I just realized that the two names will conflict. And what will happen when I get a job as an adult? Is there some way to legally have all my records refer to me by my American name?

You should've been registered with the schools under your birth name, and not an "Americanized" name, but you probably already know this by now.

Contact the Social Security Administration and ask them to advise you on how to make the necessary changes. You might also want to contact Immigration and make sure you have that part of things covered as well. It may be as simple as filing for a legal name change through the courts.

I really don't think you're going to be in any kind of trouble. Mix-up's like this occur with great frequency.

OK, go to a legal office of some sort, or a lawyer, or something. That way, if you wish, you can legally have your name changed to only your American name or your foreign name. But I"m not really sure. Ask a lawyer, or a local legal character what you can do. Good luck, buddy.

You can fill out forms for (and go through the grueling job of) getting your name changed. Then, even if you use either name, they'll know who you are IF you provide them with your SS#.
(both names will show up if you give them your SS#)
