What does: "I bought this dress for a song" mean?

Literally, it means that you sang and received the dress in payment. It traces back to troubadours who would sing for their supper. Since dress shops rarely give away dresses to wayward songstresses, it has come to mean very cheap. It's the 75% off sale at Filene's Basement.

It suggests that the dress was purchase by the buyer merely having to sing a song, rather than pay cash.
