Microwave ovens were invented by accident, when an American engineer working on radar systems during WWII was surprised by having his chocolate bar melt in his pocket. The first commercially-produced microwaves were called "Radar-Range"s.

Microwaves were discovered by Radar engineers testing radar equipment around WW1 or WWII. They would hang their lunch sacks as a target for their radar equipment, and discovered that certain frequencies would heat the contents of their food. Noticing this, it later led to the invention of the modern microwave oven. The first Microwave ovens were the size of a modern refridgerator, and could cook an entire Turkey in about 5-12 minutes. These microwave ovens were expensive to produce though because they used military grade components, which were later found to be a massive overkill on the whole concept. Afterwards, they scaled down the componects, power consumption, and size to what we know today to be the Microwave Oven.

Are you talking the fast-cook ovens that use radio waves or are you talking about the part of the elctromagnetic spectrum their energy is in?

A guy working on radar for Raytheon invented the oven when he noticed snacks in his pocket were getting warm when he worked on the radars. Raytheon was smart enough to make a commercial success from that.

Microwave energy has always been on the earth. They are part of an electromagnetic spectrum that goes from extremely long waves up through microwaves to very short waves. So they were discovered not invented. What was invented was a lot of easy compact devices for generating them.

Because they could. Microwaves aren't invented, they have always existed. The ability to generate certain kinds of light waves (microwaves) is useful in radiotelescopy and has practical applications like heating food. The microwave oven was invented to heat food.

I think microwave cooking was invented for astronaughts so that they could eat hot food without messing around with pans of boiling water and other methods that would be unfeasible in zero gravity.

Easy - to make it easier and quicker for us to eat hot meals - less time waiting and no pre-heating, like a conventional oven. It's merely the convenience of eating our food within seconds or a couple of minutes as opposed to waiting 45 minutes to an hour to eat.
