I have recently bought a BTC USB 2.0 16x DVD Writer from Maplin.

I have installed all of the stuff off the 2 discs that came with it and pretty well understand that what I have now are basic "working versions" of Nero software, that if I want to upgrade to a full blown, all singing and dancing version I can, by just clicking the button and sending my money.

No problems so far - don't they all do this sort of thing?

After the installation, and looking at my Desktop, I see several new shortcuts. In particular, there is a shortcut that when hitting it, (sorry, double clicking!), it doesn't seem to do anything at all. Nothing initialises, nothing comes up on the screen - all that happens is the hard drive light flickers for a bit as though something is loading and then nothing.

The shortcut is for "musicmatch JUKEBOX".

The information that came with the box and on-line is very limited.

Does anyone have any ideas or information on what this does or what I should do?

musicmatch can play cds, and other music on your computer, it has internet radio and some other media features. it also has a converter built in so you can convert .wav to .mp3 and so forth. I would use nero.
about your shortcut. i would do a search in windows explorer for mmjb.exe. if you dont want musicmatch remove it from your computer using add/remove programs.

Its a media player that has been bundled with your dvd drive. The idea being that in having it you would use it to burn cds or sign up to download music from their site and give them money.

It also comes with some mp3 players. Typically it won't be needed and you can uninstall it if you need to its definately not a part of nero.
