I don't have much money to spend on a hotel, but I don't want to stay in a bad place either.

you can stay in a hostel, i stayed last Nov in Manhattan Hostel, I really liked it, and believe im a very picky person

Your best bet is to look at the star ratings, which indicate the quality of the place in which you stay. There are serviced apartments like Woogoo Apartment Hotels which start from around $59 located at 306 W. 94th Street New York NY 10025 , 2 and 3 star hotels plus various types of hostels. The YMCA or YWCA is often a good option.

Take a look at this UK website below which offers plenty of deals in the US - they have a help desk i think based in the US as well. They provide a search filter where you can sort the various options and often have last minute discount deals as well as year round offers. I don't know if they have everything I've suggested.

Probably somewhere on Long Island. NYC (Manhattan) is not going to be cheap if you want nice. You should also define nice and cheap, How much can you afford??

There is a Howard Johnsons on Houston street in the Lower East Side. It won't be "cheap" but it won't be outrageous.
