I heard of stories where people have a shower [baby, etc...] and they expect guests to pay at the door. Is that rude?

Okay.. it's good you clarified because people, and even I, was thinking you meant USING a REAL shower.. but to pay to get into a baby shower? Or wedding shower? Yeah, that's rude. Aren't you supposed to bring gifts? They wanted the gifts on top of an entrance fee? It's not a club!! LOL

I have never heard of such a thing. If they couldn't have of afford that many guests they should have thought about how many to invite in the first place.

A baby shower, bridal shower is to get family and friends together to celebrate, not raise money at the door and cause havoc

I've heard of taking up a collection for the showeree, but never at the door. I've heard of dividing up the cost of the shower, but never at the door, and never among everyone invited.. The host is the host, and as such, pays for the party.
I would have conveniently "forgotten" my money at home, if that was done to me.

If you're talking about a bridal shower or a baby shower, then yes, it is very rude to charge an admission fee.

Kind of. You don't invite people to a party and ask them to pay for it. A host pays for the party. It would be acceptable if it was a potluck.
