First offense in 8 years. Pulled over on the interstate for 81 mph in 65 mph zone.

The fine is a hefty $236 and 4 points on the record. I'm not sure what is taken into consideration when coming up with the citation penalty but in any case I got busted for speeding once 8 years ago and was issued a written warning in 5 years ago. So, no violations in the past five years.

What are the chances I could get a fine / point reduction and possible a violation change to something that wouldn't impact my insurance premiums? Does the court leniency based on economic hardship? (I'm a poor grad student).

A colleague suggested I attend a defensive driving course and bring evidence to that affect to the court appearance. In doing so he thought I might get a point reduction.

Call the district attorney's office first. They will be prosecuting--instead of going to court ask if you can plead no contest to a reduced charge. Preferrably one that won't impact your insurance. Most DA's are willing to deal in leiu of going to court. You have nothing to lose.....if the DA denies your request---THEN go to court. Good Luck!

i know in maryland that if a cop doesnt show up to court, you get off because the cop has the evidence and if he's not there, then no one can say you did anything, if that is the same where you are, then yeah, it's worth going...i dont know if taking a course will help your case or not, but it may, i would find out first before spending the money for the course and then to have to shell out more for court, if it wont help....all i got, hope it helps some
