Rarely.
Most hotels require a security deposit for accomodation when you check in - just in case you run off with the furniture, linen and the bar fridge without paying.
Then most hotels would also require you to pay in advance - just in case you didn't show up and they had a wasted oppotunity to sell the room.
You could send them a cheque in advance, but that's a pain.
Frankly, you're an exception to the rules of travellers who mostly have some sort of electronic or credit card - travelling without one is like life before the internet, or before wheels were invented.
This website does allow deposits on *some* bookings made within 21 days, and then you pay the full amount on arrival. Not all hotels get invovled in this scheme.
Paying cash may also mean you'll pay more. All the discounts are based on low cost transactioning and handling cash is considered a pain.
Best of luck ... i don't know the circumstances that prevent you from using a card .... but i recommend it if you can do it.

For Travel Inn at Liverpool city center You can either book the room and pay on arrival or pre pay the room for the duration of the stay.
In your case since you don;t have a Visa/Master or Amex here are your options
1. Pay for your room in advance ( atleast 5 business days in advance) by cheque.
2. Use a freind's credit card to book the room and then pay in cash once you reach there.
( The hotel would take the credit card to book the room and then ask for the actual payment on arrival , that means you can actually pay in cash at the hotel. The credit card is merely for guarantee)
3. Buy a voucher. You can call the hotel for locations or travel agents who can sell you these. (You can also buy hotel vouchers, which is essentially pre paying for the room. At arrival you just have to show the voucher.)
4. You can use your debit card for reserving and paying for the room.
The best would be to call them and confirm on either of the option that you want to choose.

You will need a credit card to make a reservation but you can pay in cash, just tell them when you check in. I have had problems in Philadelphia and Chicago where they would not accept cash. The hotel in Chicago, sent a bill to my company instead, hard to believe. The reason they gave me was that they were not equipt to handle cash. I don't know what they do in Europe or UK

If you make the booking by phone, they will use a card as security (Maestro should be ok), just incase you don't turn up and then you can pay the hotel direct using cash on arrival.

If you're booking over the phone or internet you have to use a valid card as tey are effectivley reserving your room (they don't charge until you check in)
Could a friend /family member let them reserve on their card and then you pay cash when you check in? Alternatively, you'd have to book by post which means sending cash or possibly postal orders (if they'll accept them) or cheque if you have them. This can be time consuming.

Try phoning the one you want to book, and ask if you could pay cash, when you get there, if not could you pay cash at a local one of their group. Or Ask them how you can work it out. They want the buisiness as much as you want to stay.
