He is a maltese mixed pomeranian and 6 months old. He's less than 10 pounds. He ate a reeses peanut butter cup one day, and I'm really worried because I heard that chocolate is toxic to dogs and can kill a dog. Please help!

that's not enough to hurt him :) chocolate can be toxic to dogs, but they have to eat a lot of it and the milk chocolate kind is pretty safe. You should be worried if he gets into dark chocolate, semi-sweet chips, or baking chocolate but otherwise, it would take about a half pound of milk chocolate to do any damage to your baby!

Call your vet ASAP. A reeses peanut butter cup has a small amount of chocolate (in the outer shell); but you have a very small dog. If he ate it a few days ago and he seems fine there probably will not be an issue. However, I would still call your vet to check for any symptoms that you should be aware of, also see if there is anything that you should be administering to him as a result of what he ate.

Many pet owners are perplexed when it comes to their dogs and chocolate poisoning. They have heard the warnings but they either choose to disregard them because their dog likes it as a treat or because they are not sure if they are true. Unfortunately several dogs each year die because their owners all not informed on the dangers of dogs and chocolate poisoning. Valentine’s Day and Easter are two times of the year that your dog could be exposed to enough chocolate to be lethal to him. If you have unanswered questions about dogs and chocolate poisoning, then please read on. It is not the chocolate itself that is the culprit here but one of the naturally occurring compounds found in it. Theobromine is an alkaloid, used in humans for the treatment of high blood pressure and sometimes as a diuretic. But its effect on animals, including dogs, is potentially quite lethal. Humans can quickly metabolize, or change into energy, theobromine in an efficient manner. Your dog, however, cannot. The half-life of theobromine, or the time it takes for half of what has been eaten to be turned into energy in the body, is seventeen and a half hours. While your dog is having a hard time excreting the substance, its cardiovascular and central nervous system are under duress. This has the potential to kill your pet. Cardiac irregularity and gastrointestinal tract bleeding can also be a direct result of chocolate poisoning in dogs. Dogs with epilepsy are particularly vulnerable to theobromine, as it can precipitate seizures. In a variation of the old theme- it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog- it is the size of the amount of chocolate that your dog ingests that matters here. A pound of milk chocolate can kill a sixteen pound canine. Different kinds of chocolates are higher in theobromine levels. White, milk and hot chocolate are considerably lower than semi-sweet, dark and bitter or baking chocolate. While the “lesser” chocolates are not as high in theobromine, they are in fat, which could lead to vomiting and diarrhea.

Dont worry about it. Dont do it again. It takes more chocolate than you would think to kill a dog. If anything he would have had an upset stomach or some diarreah soon after eating it. If its been a few days, hes fine. Also, dont feed him onions, grapes, coffee, or avacados.

One PB cup shouldn't do any damage. Give him lots of water, and watch him for any signs that he is ill. Milk chocolate is one of the mildest for pups, and those cups are mostly pb not chocolate but learn from the lesson and make sure you keep a closer eye on the chocolate.

They train us as much as we train them, I now know to keep all of the following away from my pup:

-dishcloths
-dryer sheets
-chocolate
-spoons...yup, caught him trying to swallow a bloody spoon!!!
-shoelaces (nasty when you have to pull em out the other end!)
-cd's
-fridge magnets
-just about anything else that'll fit in his mouth, or looks close enough in size to fit in his mouth, or can be bitten or broken into pieces that will fit in his mouth!!

Don't let him have more and make sure he drinks a lot of water and eats enough. This will get it out of his system quicker than if he eats and drinks very little. Considering if he ate just a little bit he will be ok though.

Don't give him any more. Just one Reese's won't hurt him. Don't leave chocolate out. He'll be fine, I think it's only toxic is certain quanties.

-Keep the chocolate away from your dog
-Take he to the vet
-Feed him something good that's good for dogs so him will start liking that better
