hmm im not exactly sure about the situation but there are a few things it could be

1. He likes you and he wants you to know that it wasent his girlfriend or anything on the phone. so he put her on speaker so you could hear so you didnt get jelouos or wondering if he was lieing, if this is the case its a good thing and says that him and the girl are just friends, but he wants to be more then friends with you.
2. He dosent like you and dosent want to tell you face to face so he put it on speaker so you could hear the girl and get the point, that maybe you should back off. This may be the case and if this is i would maybe ask him, you dont want to do anything you will regret later in life.

1. Good manners dictate that he should have ignored the call since he was on a date with you and then returned the call after the date was over.

2. Did he tell the other young lady that he was on a date with you and that she was on the speaker and you could hear every word? If not, he is (in addition to being bad mannered) a disloyal friend. I would not appreciate a third party listening in on my conversations if I had not been told and asked if it was all right for the other party to listen. She called him, not both of you.

Therefore, my first reaction is that this young man was bragging to you that he had other females calling and that they were interested in him, also. Not a good first start.

It sounds like an innocent call from a female friend of his and he put her on speaker so that you could hear that the call was innocent and they are (were) not romantically involved at all. I think it was nice of him to put her on speaker so he doesn't leave you wondering what she is saying to him. I would say the call was innocent.
