From Mossberg.com FAQ:
Can I fire slugs through my 935™ or 835® vent rib, Accu-Mag® choke tube barrel?
No, 935™ and 835® field barrels (those with a ventilated rib) are "overbored," and the extra inside diameter may cause the projectile to "wobble" producing unreliable accuracy. A projectile may wedge inside the barrel causing an obstruction. Obstructions of any kind can cause damage to the firearm resulting in damage to the barrel and/or personal injury to you or those around you. Dedicated fully rifled slug barrels are available for the 935™ and 835® models. Other 935™ and 835® Accu-Mag® choke tube notes: Buckshot and steel-shot loads are not recommended for use with an extra full turkey tube installed.

no, modified choke would be halfway between cylinder bore and full choke, it's common for a do all shotgun since you can shoot rifled slugs through it effectively(unlike full which mangles it) and still get good patterning with shot instead of it being too tight(full choke) or too spread out(cylinder choke) at distance, it's popular for waterfowl hunting. it sounds like a fixed modified choke, but it's strange for a newer mossberg to have this since more of their guns use choke tubes? so I'm guessing it's a older one? the grooves you speak of are rifling and are not found in smoothbore barrels meant for shot and buckshot, so if this gun has a modified choke, it doesn't have rifling in the barrel.

NO. The model 835 is "overbored" The bore is the same as a 10 gauge and can cause the 12 gauge slug to get stuck in the barrel. Checkout their web site and you will see what i mean.

Not in the field barrel, the choke is not the problem it is the overbore to complement the 3 1/2" magnum design.
Save a hundred or so bucks and buy a rifled slug barrel, you won't regret it.

I do it all the time.
Just be careful not to use a full or extra full choke with slugs... you might do it a hundred time but eventually it will clog the choke and split the barrel.
