Crows do the same thing to hawks. Lions do the same thing to Hyenas, often assasinating them. A natural rival/enemy thing I would suppose.

Birds are said to "call out" or "mob" the enemy, term is different depending on where you live apparently.. Crows are famous for this. It teaches others who is the dangerous one around and to let the predator KNOW that they know that it's around.

The smaller birds are "calling out" the owl since the owl would likely hunt them. Its a fabulous defense system and usually drives the predator away.

The term birders use is mobbing. Bird watchers will listen for these fussing birds to find owls during the day time.
