It shouldn't take more than a few days to a few weeks to crate train your puppy. You can continue using the crate as long as is necessary. My little dog travels in his crate and loves to go into it. You just tell him, "get in your housie", and he goes right in.

If you're using it for housetraining, you can use it until your puppies are able to "hold it" for as long as is needed.

If you're using it for travel, sleeping space, or other types of training, you can use it indefinitely. If used properly, the dog will see it, not as a cage, but as a cozy cave, or sanctuary.

depends on the dogs. some can be left out once they can hold it and aren't destructive. mine will always be in their crates when i'm not home because one has severe separation problems and has broken windows, and the other because i don't want her to be out and my bart in his crate. they will sleep in there forever too because they would(and have) wrestle all night if I din't separate them. The crate is their place, it is perfeclly fine to use it as long as you have them. Usually they don't ever enjoy being in their crates, but until you are absolutely certain they won't use the bathroom, tear down curtains, pull cushins off the couch, learn to open the fridge, figure out how to jump onto the counters, eat the clothes in the hamper, destroy the toilet paper, eat your homework....and the lost goes on....
many are fine being left out once their are house broken, others, not so much.

Until they can be trusted to be left alone unsupervised and not cause trouble or destruction. Once they are housebroken, leave them out for trial periods, first 5 minutes and peek in the windows. If they can handle that, give them 20 minutes, etc. Eventually you can learn if they can handle the freedom rather than just one day go to work for 8 hours and hope all day that the house will still be intact when you get back.

My puppies were crate-trained until they were fully house-trained. For some, it was 2 months old.

Personally I think you should probably do it for one year because if you do it for to long they will start not wanting to go in there crate, and you don't want that to happen. Good luck!
