Of course my situation is typical. I want to trade in my car (that Im upside down in) for a less expensive car for lower payments......any suggestions....Someone said to make sure the dealer actually pays off my car instead of them adding on the remainder balance...any other suggestion.....and just for the sake of asking...what kind of car do you recommend???? I have 2 kids..bigger..so no baby chairs, and I travel for my boss. So suggest something that has great gas mileage (even though my boss pays for my gas)

Don’t lie.

You’ll have better luck buying a new car.

Visit local hometown dealerships. A car dealer that sponsors the local Little League Baseball, Soccer teams, and contributes to school functions is looking for repeat customers.

Explain your circumstances and your needs.

New car manufacturers offer rebates and subsidized financing on slow moving merchandise. (You’re not going to buy the latest and greatest car this time.) A new car factory rebate can offset the deficiency balance on your trade-in.

You may get everything your after and a friendly local dealership to return to in future.

For any car you might consider, ask your dealer for a carfax history report. This will tell you where the car has been, accidents involved, etc.

I recommend taking a small flexible refrigerator magnet with you to the dealership. If you suspect body damage on the vehicle, check the area with the magnet. Usually if it has had work done, it will not stick to that area because of the filler they use.

If you make an offer on a vehicle, and the dealer tells you "I'll have to check with my boss to see if that's ok", then walk away. The salesperson knows exactly how low they can go...this is a tactic they use to get you to mull over raising your offer.

Also, make sure the dealer has paid any outstanding registration. My car had been bought from auction, and the dealer tried to forward the outstanding registration balance to me 3 months later.

I got myself an almost brand new 2003 ford focus(11k miles) for about $9500. It gets great mileage, has plenty of room in the backseat for two kids, and works good for my commute.

Don't give them your phone number(unless your gonna buy the car), or they'll harass you till the day you die!

Above all, DON'T BE PRESSURED by the Dealer. It's always ok to politely say "let me think about it", accept the salesperson's card, and make your escape.

First, walk into the dealership claiming NO TRADE-IN. Go thru the normal cat and mouse game to get them down to their bottom dollar (Don't go a penny more than 20% off of the window sticker). Once the deal is made, tell them you just gave it some thought and you'd like to go ahead and trade in your current vehicle to get rid of one payment.
Then you can see by dollars how much it goes down or up.
As for the kind of car, Dodge Caravan?
