Depends if it is a boy or a girl. If they have a choice it should be something they enjoy reading. Here are some that might work.

Peter and the Starcatchers
Any of the Black Cauldron Series by Loydd Alexander
Narnia Series by CS Lewis
Pride and Prejudice By Jane Austin
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Eragon series (if a strong reader) by Christopher Paolini
Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer
Harry Potter series
Sherlock Holmes
Tom Sawyer

Good Luck

I teach 8th grade English. Here are some of my (and my students') favorites:

Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick (Easy reading, good story, my students love it.)

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton (A favorite about "tough" teens in the 1960's, short and easy.)

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (More challenging, but fantastic; one of the best books ever written! )

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle (Fantasy about kids who get invoved a magical/sci-fi adventure.)

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (Fantasy classic, longer and somewhat challenging, but if you like Lord of the Rings...)

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (Classic about a group of sisters during the Civil War.)

The Watsons Go to Birmingham by Christoper Paul Curtis (About a family's experience during the civil rights movement of the 1960's; funny and serious.)

You can find out more about all of these on Amazon.com
Good Luck :)

"Chinese CInderella" by Adeline Yen Mah, "Tuesdays with Morrie," or "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok. They're all deep, somewhat sad (The Chosen is happiest) short, and easy to come up with material to write about.
